The Best Connecting Airports in Europe for Long-Haul Flights
If you're flying long-haul through Europe, your connecting airport matters more than you might think. Transfer times, terminal layouts, lounge quality, and onward route networks vary dramatically between hubs.
We compared Europe's five biggest connecting airports on the metrics that actually matter to passengers.
The contenders
- Istanbul (IST) — 315 destinations, Turkish Airlines hub
- Frankfurt (FRA) — 289 destinations, Lufthansa hub
- Paris CDG (CDG) — 278 destinations, Air France hub
- Amsterdam (AMS) — 271 destinations, KLM hub
- Madrid (MAD) — Iberia hub, gateway to Latin America
Istanbul (IST)
Why it's great
Istanbul has the most destinations of any European airport — 315 nonstops. Turkish Airlines flies to places no other European carrier reaches: secondary cities in Africa, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. If you're going somewhere unusual, Istanbul probably has a route.
The airport itself is relatively new (opened 2018), with modern terminals and efficient transfer facilities. Turkish Airlines' business class lounge is consistently rated among the best in the world.
The downside
Transfer times can be long due to security re-screening. The airport is massive. And Istanbul's geographic position, while perfect for Europe-to-Asia connections, adds distance for Americas-to-Europe routings.
Best for
Connecting to the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, and South/Southeast Asia.
Frankfurt (FRA)
Why it's great
Frankfurt is Lufthansa's main hub and one of Europe's most efficient connecting airports. The transfer process is streamlined, especially within Terminal 1. Star Alliance connections work seamlessly.
289 nonstop destinations, with excellent coverage to North America, Asia, and all of Europe.
The downside
The airport's two terminals are far apart — if your connection requires a terminal change, allow extra time. The airport shows its age in some areas.
Best for
Star Alliance connections, especially Americas to Europe and Europe to Asia.
Paris CDG
Why it's great
278 destinations and Air France's global hub. The network is especially strong to former French colonies in Africa, the Pacific, and the Caribbean. CDG has the best coverage to West and North Africa of any European hub.
The downside
CDG is famously confusing to navigate. Terminal changes can take 30+ minutes. Many transit passengers have horror stories about tight connections here. The terminals range from modern (Terminal 2E/F) to dated (Terminal 1).
Best for
Connecting to Africa, French overseas territories, and Southeast Asia.
Amsterdam (AMS)
Why it's great
Schiphol is one of the most passenger-friendly airports in Europe. Everything is under one roof — no terminal changes, no bus transfers. 271 destinations with strong coverage everywhere.
KLM's hub operation is efficient, and the airport's single-terminal design means minimum connecting times are among the shortest in Europe.
The downside
Schiphol has faced capacity issues and long security lines in recent years. The airport is being renovated, which can cause disruptions.
Best for
Passengers who prioritize ease of connection. Best single-terminal experience in Europe.
Madrid (MAD)
Why it's great
Madrid is the natural bridge between Europe and Latin America. Iberia and its partners operate extensive networks to South and Central America. Terminal 4 is modern and efficient.
Madrid is also the closest major European hub to the Americas, meaning shorter flying times and less jet lag.
The downside
Smaller network to Asia compared to Istanbul or Frankfurt. The airport is strong for Americas connections but less compelling for other routings.
Best for
Connecting between Europe and Latin America. Also good for transatlantic connections.
Quick comparison
- Most destinations: Istanbul (315)
- Easiest connection: Amsterdam (single terminal)
- Best for Africa: Paris CDG
- Best for Latin America: Madrid
- Best for Star Alliance: Frankfurt
- Best lounge: Istanbul (Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge)
- Newest airport: Istanbul (2018)
The verdict
There's no single best connecting airport — it depends on where you're going. But if we had to pick one for overall connectivity and experience, Istanbul wins on route network breadth, and Amsterdam wins on ease of connection.
